it's just a second mic with a high compression effect on it. basically the effects(mid,treble,bass) are all buried. gives off an extremely thinned out sound. they use so much of that effect on the albums...it just makes sense to set one up for the live shows...

The voice has a phaser on it (or flanger maybe), and it also has some repeats (delay) and some reverb.
It may be recorded using two mics, but I don't think so.
