Okay, I'm an experienced composer, but I'm totally out of the loop in terms of using complex programs (intuitively, that is) like Reaktor and Absynth. I can handle all the basics on those, but that's about it. Does anyone recommend any sort of video tutorial or some sort of learning utility that would help me learn these really well in a reasonable amount of time?

thx

Well, every synth is a different beast, but some understanding of sound synthesis would definitely be helpful!

I've done a google search and found this link, looks quite interesting...

^ an intuitive post there, Mr. G! ;)

Well..tweaking is the way forward really. But a basic knowledge of the fundamentals helps. I did a mind numbing college course on it - it took months and months to learn well...not a lot really. Now almost everyone has t'internet. Get Googling! ;) (or indeed use the search engine of your choice!)

A good place to start would be...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_synthesis

...to get some basic background info. There will be links to allsorts from therein.

Let us know how you get on...

You want ardour/jack. Rosegarden for midi synths. Hydrogen for drums. ZynAddSubFX for a soft synth. Jackrack for effects. These can all be connected together in pathcage and synced up from jack control so you can have your synthemergency crank radio and drum loops playing in their own apps but into ardour where you can add your audio tracks. You can hook your midi instuments into rosegarden and play along/record withpay advance the tracks in ardour. jackrack can be used anywhere you want on the audio, on indivudual tracks or sub masters or master tracks.

First, you need UbuntuStudio and read all the how tos and tutorials you can find. here are a few links to get you started;

There is no quick and easy way to get a grip on sounds synthesis.

Your best bet is to understand the basics by experiemnting with a very simple synth. In FL Studio there is one called the 3xOsc that use sometimes.

Once you understand how the characteristics of the way different waveforms sound and the way the ADSR envelope produces sound, then you can go to the next level by trying to understand how to layer multiple oscillators and/or modulate them.
