Guys......and girls :-)

Everyone on this site has the sampling bug, in one way or another. I sample tracsk all the time. But I've gotta get something I wanna get off my chest.(All Kanye West fans please try to see my point of view...please!!)

If you are in any way familiar with Daft Punk's album "Discovery", you will know that there's a song called "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". Now when I fisrt heard Kanye's track on You Tube, I could swear it was Daft Punk playing on my speakers.

Hip Hop is famous for sampling, but I think that tracks like this are killing Hip Hop production. What happened to sounding different. I had a similar reaction to the Busta Rhymes song "Touch It", where they used a sample from the Daft Punk song "Technologic".

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I'm hearing more and more re-makes and remixes than original music being released. What's happening to originality. Have we run out of ideas???

this is what the hip hop world is like now . all commercial bullshit, i think the use of the sample is terrible and shows no origonallity at all.
i thought when he used shirley bassey it was well done and original but when he keeps doing it it becomes boring.these guys are supposed to be genuises according to music media(kiss arses). not all sampling is bad its when the construct the whole tune arround it then its rip off.
glad i got that of my chest now.

I agree. Even rock artists are useing othere bands riffs in their sings and not changing them at all. Like when Kid Rock took the main riff of Metallicas "Sad But true" for his aong "American Badass". It's gettin scary in the music biz.

*sigh* music in general is in a sorry state right now. maybe that's why we're seeing a lot more people making their own music. or, they are seeing how easy it is to make a song and want to cash in. very disappointing. and these lyrics don't even make any sense. how the hell do you "Superman that ho"? people have issues.

Actually, my buddy told me how to "superman" someone but I don't think this is the right board for a explanation.

I feel like you can put Kanye's version in the category of a remix. I don't see anything wrong with it really. Hip Hop started with sampling anyway! Even Daft Punk themselves sampled music like Priori has shown. (I saw this vid a while ago) And Thats okay too! I think there are plenty of real and original hip hop and electronic
musicians out there. You just won't hear it on MTV!

Good point. Most of my favorite hip hop artists that I think are totally original are never on MTV.

i'm not a hip hop guy but i like "stronger"... it has a great groove and driving refrain... kanye west exploited that sample much, much better than daft punk and made a bigger money maker... in my opinion, of course...

i wonder how much do they all pay to the guy who owns the sample...:)

Knowing Kanye, he was probally able to pay them less by giving them credit like that.

Just to note: I am a much bigger fan of Daft Punk than Kanye and I try to sample as little as possible for my own music.

I would just like to ad this list for those that are not familiar with the process at which Daft Punk creates music. Let's not forget about where there material comes from. They are multitalented "DJ's" really.

D.P. Sample list:

Breakwater - "Release The Beast"
used in "Robot Rock"
Edwin Birdsong -"Cola Bottle Baby"
used in "Harder Better Faster Stronger"
The Imperials - "Can You Imagine"
used in "Crescendolls"
Eddie Johns - "More Spell On You"
used in "One More Time"
George Duke - "I Love You More"
used in "Digital Love"
Oliver Cheatham - "Get Down Saturday Night"
used in "Voyager"
Tata Vega - "Get It Up For Love"
used in "Da Funk" (Ten Minutes of Funk Mix)
Jerry Goldsmith - "The Rec Room"
used in "Around The World"
Karen Young - "Hot Shot"
used in "Indo Silver Club"
Barry Manilow - "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed"
used in "Superheroes"
Sister Sledge - "Il Macquillage Lady"
used in "Aerodynamic"
ELO - "Evil Woman"
used in "Face to Face"
Cerrone - "Supernature" (Original 14min Mix)
used in "Verdis Quo"

Even tho Kanyes material is not original it is finally changing the sound of "hip hop" and allowing completely new crowds of people to become fans.

I dont have an issue with sampling at all. Hip Hop is and always will be one of my favourite genres and as someone else has mentioned hip hop was to a certain extent built on sampling.

And I dont have an issue with Kanye sampling the crap out of everybody to make his own music. People seem to forget P Diddy pretty much forged the Bad Boy label based on this principal. Sure it helped he had one of the best MC's ever (surely you know im refering to Biggie!) to help deliver this, but alot of the stuff was that fun party style hip hop that sampled alot of popular 70's and 80's music.

I dont see what Kanye is doing as any different, I just think it sounds like crap. In saying that I quite liked the Bad Boy sound when it was huge and know alot of people felt the same way i do about Kanye now.

The thing I really really dont like about Kanye's new stuff is all this autotune nonsense. If you cant sing, FFS dont let a computer do it for you, otherwise your putting yourself in the same basket as 'artists' like Paris Hilton.

Ultimately, though, hip-hop is less about the music and more about the lyrical content -- in theory (unless of course you're Soulja Boy). Kanye's song in general works, until you get to the competing choruses. Kanye layering his own chorus atop DP's really is a mess.
