i am going to point you to a song i did copmpletely in FL Studio with no samples , just melody, its at www.betarecords.com/djemboy2 and its called St Elmos Trance, the way i did that was to lay down a chord sequence first, each chord lasted 2 bars , once you have your chord sequence watch the cursor move across your sequence and in your head play the melody, you will see where the notes should occur, dont worry if you dont get the notes at the right point, you can always move them around, even playing the melody with your fingers on your desk will help, but always watch where your cursors are, zoom in a s close as possible, i would say have 1 or 2 bars visible, oh and if you want just one bar to loop, in the piano roll editor put your mouse at the top of the screen were you have the bar count( look for the numbers 1 2 3 4 etc) hold the ctrl key and click where you want to start playing from drag it to where you want it to end and voila no more having to stop and stast the track, but im guessing you already knew that.
the thing you might have to face is that at some point if you want to write decent melodies you are going to have to learn about music, chords and so on, but heres a little tip that will help you find any major or minor triad(chord made up of 3 notes), for any majot chord put you finger on any note, try D for this excercise, then without removing your finger count 4 keys(black and white), place your next finger on the key you arrived at, then count another 3 keys and put your finger on that key, your fingers should be on the following keys D F# and A, Thjats the chord of D Major, Now put your finger back on the D key and in the same way count 3 Keys and then 4 Keys, this time your fingers should be on D, F and A, you know have the key of D Minor, Do this for literally any major or minor chord that is made up of 3 notes, so now you can find Aflat minor or C# Major, E#Minor(Remember start with the key of E #and count 3 Keys and then 4 Keys).
Again you may already know this , and the reason i am telling you it is that i was hopeless at music theory, after i was told that i found it much easier to experiment and enjoyed the creation process a lot more.
I will say one more thing that learning scales is probably the best thing you will learn for writing melodies, knowing what notes will fit into the choprd you are using will improve your melody writing skills immensly, i dont mean sit there and practise two hours a day, but have a chart of the musical scales so that you can see where you can take your melody if your chords progress from C to F to G to A, seeing what can be played and what similar or close notes each chord has will improve your melodies melodiosness and its logical direction.
Well i hope that some of this helps, and i hoppe you finally begin to get those deadbeats put to some use.
