I'm a big fan of making beats from scratch. I just think that making your own music is so much more rewarding. I'm not hating on samples, but there's this craze in my country (South Africa) where our top producers are releasing sampled grooves only. They don't even chop up the samples, they pretty much just loop the original. I'll be recording an album with my cousins later this year, and I'm only sampling on one or two tracks, coz I believe in being original.

I know this site is based on samples, but I think a lot of creativity is being lost through sampling. Sometimes I'd spend a week just trying to come up with a melody or a bridge in a track, but when I do it always sound original and rewarding. My tracks attract a lot of attention coz they sound original (sometimes not that good, but that something I'm working on).

I'm all for sampling, some of my best tracks are from sampling, but I'd like to know how you guys feel??

my friend i am from SA aswell and i am all for sampling... truly the producers who loop original samples are the house producers and the dj's who are remixing... the main problem wit south africas hip hop is it lacks professional sound... and thats why i started sampling.. i used to make tracks from scratch but it didnt get the sound i wanted

Trip Wire!!! This is the DC coming striaght outta East London. I know it's discouraging when you compare your own sound to Timbaland or DJ Honda and DJ Babu (I'm a Hip Hop head). I've been producing for only 8 months and the reason why I can get a professional sound, is coz I've done ALOT OF READING on techniques and styles from other people and magazines. Go back to your old tracks, and try using stuff you've read up on, and you'll hear the difference.

What hip hop producers like battlekat and nyambz don't get is that we'll never sell world wide, unless we come wit something different. Sampling only makes us sound like the states or europe. My hip hop sounds nothing like the states, in fact my biggest influence is Nujabes and Fat Jon from Japan.

Give yourself time, your skills will improve. I still got a lot to learn, so i read alot of articles and tips on the net. I hope we can change the SA music seen for the better. Look out for The Desert Camel....

The only reason "big" programmers and producers get that awesome sound quality is by the equipment and DAWs they use. I myself do not have much equipment due to being a poor college student haha, but the gear you use has everything to do with the sound that comes out. As for sampling versus originally recorded music, I do my fair share of both, and treat each equally.
