So...like, how do you all find your inspiration? Personally, I really dig SampleSwap because of the random aspect I now have...and I really enjoy choosing my sounds randomly and shaping them until they fit the mix, rather than the other way around.

Up until recently (and for awhile), I had been using nothing more than a Korg Electribe SX and some freeware (Audacity) to record. I would fill a bank with sounds randomly (or pretty close, anyway), leaving some room for resampling. Then I would just play and see where it took me. Need another sound? Spin the dial until something clicks, and quickly.

NOW, having added Ableton Live 6 to my studio, I am SO happy I donated $30 to just get the DVD of sounds; once copied to My Big Drive, it became an amazing assortment of randomness. Sure, some of them might get me into trouble commercially...but rarely do I use something 8just* the way it was sampled to begin with.

Anyway...I am just curious how the rest of you find your Beginning in a new track. Mine can be derived from movies or books, but rarely someone else's music...not directly, anyways. :)

Well, I always begin a new song in one of 3 different ways;

1 - I have an ideia that I want to put into practice:
For instance, my tour "Nodachi - Sense-A-Tonal" is based on 6 songs, one for each human sense (sixt sense included :D);

2 - I create a really cool loop and go from there;

3 - I get some sounds randomly and see what inspiration do I get;

The greatest source of inspiration (for me) is listening to other peoples music, and learning to see it how they see it. All humans have personal taste which limits what they are willing to try. This in turn puts a limit on what they will achieve and will ultimately slow down their musical growth. Over the past 15 years i've made techno, breakbeat, drum and bass, garage, classical, ambient, you name it, i've tried to make it. And through all the successes and failures, i've walked away from every track a better musician.

Try something new and you will always learn something new.
The steeper the learning curve, the faster you get to the top.

I shoulda said I don't find inspiration in the music of others *anymore*, so much. My bad. That's where we all start, though. I used to listen to things and do my best to emulate what I heard with my (ANCIENT and) meager equipment. Having been into electronic music since I was a wee teen and used to manage a record store, I've had quite a few things to hear. Hell, I still must have over a 1,000 CDs.

Simply, I would never be able to honestly say I took no inspiration from the music of others; it was my classroom environment. :)

Not a whole lot of people wanting to talk about their inspirations. Is it because I remove 'other people's' music from the equation? Weird.

MY latest inspiration is the technology itself. This does *not* include MP3, either; my latest track up here sounds even better in it's native WAV...lotta detail melted together in the transfer.

Anyway, the technology now is so amazing. I started doing computer music on an Atari 1040st with Cubase about 1000 years ago, or so. I have played with lots and lots of things, but not so much on Macs...so stuff crashed and I decided to wait for the technology to catch up. It did, boy howdy and how.

I am having trouble sleeping lately cuz I keep replaying stuff in my head. Hell, The Dander Lion is the sound of my NEED to make music right now. I want something to beat on for drums, though. I discovered that the ESX is a terrible controller. Don't ask. The arpeggiator rules, but...never mind.

Korg has a white thing I want. I have a picture on the wall, but I can't read the print. Coupla hundred and I have something to beat on *and* a box for the controllers in Ableton. Think part of my inspiration until then is not gonna include drums much; I hate playing drums on a keyboard, even after all these years. Harumph.

having made music for a fair number of years, i'm not sure i know what true inspiration feels like anymore. i seem to just start building around a certain sample, beat or idea, using my own tried and tested techniques and at some point i become inspired by my own accidents. the more things i try out, the quicker things just slot nicely together. however, one trick that really works for me is putting a hell of a lot of work into a small section - maybe 16 bars or so - really work at it so you have gone way past the point of being sick of the sound of it (this is the strange orgasmic moment when i do my most impressive work), and then just leave it alone for a couple of days.don't even listen to it. then when you finally go back to it, you will be amazed at how good it sounds. you'll be like "did i do that?". that moment is what gives me the inspiration to complete the track. its a kind of painful technique but it never fails me.

Most of the time I just hear a sample, then think up a beat to go with it. The other times I mentally sample songs I hear throughout the day, then try to replicate parts of them in FL studio....

To get me inspired i dunno really, most no all the time im out walking i get these tunes in my head and the keep going until its a song. Now thee is a great song in my head and im out walking but by the time i get back its lost. Anyways i have a little mp3player i carry with me all the time now and it has a little crappy mic on the end of it but its good enough to hear what was playing in my head before, so then its just a case of getting the idea out of my mp3 into MIDI or something thru FL. Anther good way is making a cuppa tea! lol

Sorry for the long winded & detailed response! lol I know all i had to say was, when out walking i hear a tune then repeat it into my mp3 player but im kinda awkward like that! :)
