You can also apply stereo effects to the elements in your mix, without letting things sound too processed. I do most of my work in Reason, and I like the new Unison effect. It gives a nice stereo chorus but if you only put a little on you'll barely be able to tell its there. There's tons of different effects out there, experiment a little but try to keep things fairly dry so your tracks don't become dominated by processing.

Indeed. Sometimes it's interesting to automate the effects so that they sound dry at first and blend into it (chorus, delay, reverb, etc.).
